Book Review # 30 [ Carry On by Rainbow Rowell]

Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here—it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story—but far, far more monsters.

-----

I'm sorry guys but no I did not enjoy this book at all, the only reason I picked it up was because of the hype. (Wrong move) but I was not satisfied. I found myself just skimming through the pages.

Simon and Baz? The entire relationship was totally flat. boring. and inconsequential.

When I was reading the first half Simon was completely obsessed with him. It annoyed me honestly. I'm like "Dude get your shit together don't you have other things to worry about?" This book had 12+ chapters of Simon obsessing over where Baz was. I was close to pulling my hair out if he asked where he was again. I get they are supposed to be together or whatever but still..calm down the fuck down. The world is pretty lame as well.

My point? This book did absolutely nothing for me the only reason I gave it a star was for Penelope, she was alright. I honestly didn't finish it. (I'm definitely sending this book back and getting my refund)

You know, I normally don't read books that has a same sex relationship as a lead -- (nothing personally against the LBGT+ community, the thing is.... I just don't care *shrugs*)-- but I decide to give this a try, and I've also read other books that have the same theme, but it's a no go.

I guess this genre like Erotica is NOT my cup of tea.

Oh well nothing lost there. Onto better things!

Rating: 1/5
*p.s my opinions are my own. respect that.

Book Review #29 [ICED by Karen Marie Moning]

The year is 1 AWC—After the Wall Crash. The Fae are free and hunting us. It’s a war zone out there, and no two days are alike. I’m Dani O’Malley, the chaos-filled streets of Dublin are my home, and there’s no place I’d rather be.

Dani “Mega” O’Malley plays by her own set of rules—and in a world overrun by Dark Fae, her biggest rule is: Do what it takes to survive. Possessing rare talents and the all-powerful Sword of Light, Dani is more than equipped for the task. In fact, she’s one of the rare humans who can defend themselves against the Unseelie. But now, amid the pandemonium, her greatest gifts have turned into serious liabilities.

Dani’s ex–best friend, MacKayla Lane, wants her dead, the terrifying Unseelie princes have put a price on her head, and Inspector Jayne, the head of the police force, is after her sword and will stop at nothing to get it. What’s more, people are being mysteriously frozen to death all over the city, encased on the spot in sub-zero, icy tableaux.

When Dublin’s most seductive nightclub gets blanketed in hoarfrost, Dani finds herself at the mercy of Ryodan, the club’s ruthless, immortal owner. He needs her quick wit and exceptional skill to figure out what’s freezing Fae and humans dead in their tracks—and Ryodan will do anything to ensure her compliance.

Dodging bullets, fangs, and fists, Dani must strike treacherous bargains and make desperate alliances to save her beloved Dublin—before everything and everyone in it gets iced.

------

OH MY. OH...MY.

How do I words everyone? How do I words? I am all over this book. Set in the same world and timeline as the Fever series, this new triology brought by Ms. Karen Marie Moning is bringing us a new story surrounding two VERY familar characters from Mac and Barrons world (the main protagonists from the Fever series in case you didn't know..)

In ICED we follow smart mouth, energetic Dani O'Malley  as she protects her messed up city of Dublin alongside mystery club owner Ryodan. Now, guys I'm just gonna start out by saying I like Dani and Ryodan wayyy more than Mac and Barrons.

I guess mostly because Dani grew up in this world so she knows her stuff, she knows how to protect and to fight for herself. And Ryodan (unlike Barrons) is much more -- easy to like. I'm not saying Ryodan is some saint because he is not. He's a robot like figure. Calculating and cold. Not to mention his business Club Chester isn't exactly for the weak-hearted. There's this quote that describes him well:

"She think he's not an animal like Barrons. That's he more civilized. She's right, he is more polished. But, it only makes him more dangerous. With Barrons you expect to get fucked up royally. With Ryodan? You don't see it coming...Barrons breaks heads. Ryodan turns them inside out. Barrons fucks you up. Ryodan makes you fuck yourself up."

But, he has his light moments that made me smile or chuckle mostly when he's with Dani and with Barron I didn't really have that.

Other than these two we also have the return of Christian. He's newly-transformed and slowly but surely becoming an Unseelie Prince. Christian has a bit of a creepy infatuation with Dani in here but not so much were you'd be gagging in your mouth ; more like giving him the eye. We're also introduced to Dani's best bud Dancer. Now, at first Dancer seems like the only normal person in the story. DING DING!! Normal? That's a red flag right there if you've read the Fever series. There's something about Dancer I know there is. I mean he even had the balls to stand up and call out Ryodan and Christian TO THEIR FACES. And, walked away without a scratch!

Suspicious much? Hopefully, we'll learn about Dancer in the coming books.

The surrounding issue everyone has with ICED is the relationship or could be relationship between Ryodan and Dani. Guys, GUYS!  Listen up. I'm all for Dani and Ryodan if Moning solves the age thing. I'm also for Dani not ending up with anything. But, let's be real there was no indication of Ryodan having feelings for Dani in this book. On occasion and straight-out he's mentioned that she will become one hell of a woman in her years (with which I agree). But, it was nothing more than that. I mean Dani and Ryodan was more like....well Batman and Robin. I think we gotta awhile before it goes any further. That's all I gotta say.

Either way, go check out this new series because you'll be in for a wild ride!

Book Review #28 [Heist Society by Ally Carter]

When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her on a trip to the Louvre…to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria…to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own—scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately, leaving “the life” for a normal life proves harder than she’d expected.

Soon, Kat's friend and former co-conspirator, Hale, appears out of nowhere to bring Kat back into the world she tried so hard to escape. But he has a good reason: a powerful mobster has been robbed of his priceless art collection and wants to retrieve it. Only a master thief could have pulled this job, and Kat's father isn't just on the suspect list, he is the list. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat’s dad needs her help.

For Kat, there is only one solution: track down the paintings and steal them back. So what if it's a spectacularly impossible job? She's got two weeks, a teenage crew, and hopefully just enough talent to pull off the biggest heist in her family's history--and, with any luck, steal her life back along the way.

-----

And, I'm back. Hello, hello yes.

I'm starting the new season reviews with a book from a favorite author of mine - Heist Society by Ally Carter.

Now, Carter's other series is more of the spy/assassin persuasion. This one? Well, here we dive into the world of professional thieves and con-artists!

We follow Katarina Bishop and her skillful family. Along with her best bud W.W Hale, her cousin Gabrielle, the twins Angus and Hamish, and the our resident tech Simon. Kat and the gang set out to con not just anybody but a legendary thief among their world. I really loved this story it was almost like Ocean Eleven except with teenagers.

Everyone has an air of mystery around them in this book. Kat's not your typical girl besides being a thief she's also very calm and level-minded; the brains and leader of the operation. Quite a contrast, to her cousin who's all smiles and seduction and her best friend who tends to ooze charm and money.

We also meet some heavy hitters within the Bishop family; Kat's father and Uncle Eddie. Now, Kat's dad I totally love he seems pretty cool. I was a bit miffed we didn't get to see much of him but from everything that happened I can understand. Now, Uncle Eddie? Nope. Nuh uh. This is someone you DO NOT mess with. You know that one family member that's pretty quiet and to the side? Everyone has a measure of respect for him/her, you look in their eyes and you KNOW they've been through some shit? And, that when THEY give you advice, you best take it? Yeah, that's Uncle Eddie in a nutshell.

There's more to the series I can't wait for the third book to come out. I already read the second - Uncommon Criminals. I'll review it.....someday. (lol)

Book Review #27 [Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley]

Lauren Grahame has spent her whole life thinking something special was going to happen. She didn’t know what it was, she just knew it would one day be hers. But she learned the hard way that special wasn’t on offer.

So, after divorcing her cheating husband, Lauren searched for nothing special and she thought she found it when she landed a job as a waitress in a biker bar in Carnal. It was perfect: a nothing job in a nowhere bar in Nowheresville.

Then Tatum Jackson walked in. Part-owner of the bar, he took one look at high-class Lauren and wanted nothing to do with her. And he made this known, loudly.

Tate’s angry insults seared in her brain, Lauren decides the feeling is mutual and she doesn’t want anything to do with the gloriously handsome Tate Jackson. The clash of the bartender and barmaid begins but, even though Tate makes his change of mind clear (in biker-speak, a language Lauren is not fluent in), Lauren is intent on going her own way.

Until a serial killer hits Carnal and Lauren finds out Tate isn’t a bartender, he’s a bounty hunter. He stakes his claim for Lauren before he goes on the hunt for a killer but Laurie doesn’t speak biker nor does she understand bounty hunters and Tate comes back from the hunt to find his old lady has moved on.

Life throws curveball after curveball at Laurie and Tate. As secrets are revealed, women are brutally murdered, and Lauren tries to find her inner biker babe.

-----

*Disclaimer: I just want to point some things out about Kristen Ashley's male leads and books. These guys are unapologetic bad-asses. Not one- NOT ONE- is perfect, or even exhibits "perfection-like" attributes. A quote from one of Kristen's interviews:

"....They are who they are, they do what they do, there’s a reason why they do it and they understand it isn’t socially acceptable and they don’t give a crap. This is not to say I agree with their takes on the world."

Now about the books, Kristen is a self-published author, she's not apart of a company or whatever. So, the editing or the writing is not perfect. If that's a peeve for you, then she may not be for you. But, if you can get past that, enjoy her AMAZING books then YAY! And, also there is good amount of foul language in the Colorado Man books and the Dream Man series. So, if THAT is a peeve for you, you might not want to read those books. (lol)
-----

Say what? I'm doing another Kristen Ashley book? Damn right I am. I'm on a K.A trip (!) right now. She's officially on my favorite authors list. I mean, honestly guys she's THE COOLEST.

Anyway, this is the first review of another K.A series - Colorado Man. In this book, we follow Lauren Grahame and Tatum Jackson. You can pretty much get the jist of the story from the summary above so I'll get straight to the core.

Lauren, our female lead, is a woman looking for a place for where she belongs. She's trying to figure out what it is she wants and where she wants to go. After leaving her no good husband, Lauren finds herself in Carnal, Colorado eventually getting a job as a waitress in the local biker bar. Lauren in the beginning is lost which is understood considering the situation she just came out of. By the end of the book, Lauren finds her inner "biker babe" and becomes a strong woman who know what she wants....

And, she finds that with the help of our alpha male/local bounty hunter - Tatum Jackson. Ugh TATUM JACKSON. I...*BREATHES* I will tell you right here in the beginning of this book and part of the middle Tate is AN ASS. He is, he really is. Tate has a foul mouth, a short fuse, protective, aggressive, straight-talker, hardworking, loyal, and devoted. Negative to the positive. When your reading this at first you don't like Tate, esp when it comes to the VERY FIRST thing that came out of his mouth about Lauren was a totally jackass-like comment. But, give it time because I can guarantee if you continue reading you will LOVE Tate by the end. Most of you will probably will WANT a Tatum Jackson of your own.

Besides the romance which by the way is hottttt. *whew* We also have a very serious problem down in Carnal. Someone is kidnapping and murdering young women. And, it's up to Tate and the DPD to figure out who. What we don't realize along with everyone else, is that this case hits closer to home than anyone realizes.

The side characters of Sweet Dreams are well....full of character. Not so much humorous as Tex or Shirleen from the Rock Chick series. But, still enjoyable. My favorite is Jonas. Tate's 10 yrs. old son. HE IS SO ADORABLE. Literally, a mini-Tate. And, I love when he first met Lauren and automatically called her MILF. (lmao)

(side note: We see two familiar faces show up in this book, Hank Nightingale and Eddie Chavez from the Rock Chick series!! *squealsss*)

Sweet Dreams is my favorite out of the Colorado Man series, always worth a re-read.

Rating: 5/5

Quote:  (Jonas and Lauren)

"I'm not goin' on dates. I'm playin' the field."
Dad burst out laughing but I glared and snapped. "Jonas!"

Jonas looked at Dad. "I gotta keep my options open, make sure I get a good one." I looked at the celing. "Lord, deliver me," I implored and looked back at Jonas when he poked me in the ribs.

"Laurie, I'm ten." He used my words against me then grinned cheekily again. "Like I said, gotta keep my options open."

LOL Oh Jonas....

Book Review #26 [Rock Chick Renegade by Kristen Ashley]

Jules has got a score to settle against the drug dealers of Denver. Vance has made it his mission that Jules won’t get dead while dishing out vigilante justice. Jules doesn’t have time for romance, she’s too busy saving the world and she enlists Zip (the gunstore owner), Heavy (an ex-PI) and Frank (a mysterious recluse) to help.

The Rock Chicks of Fortnum’s Bookstore get involved to provide romantic advice and guidance, none of which Jules accepts at first. The Hot Bunch of Nightingale Investigations adopt Jules as one of their own. Even though Jules tries to hang on to her inner Head Crackin’ Mamma Jamma, the Rock Chicks; Hot Bunch; Jules’s long-suffering Uncle Nick; Jules’s friend the rotund, African-American, Jackie-O wannabe, May; and especially Vance will stop at nothing to wear her down.

But Jules makes some bad guys pretty angry and one is dedicated to taking her out. Vance and the Hot Bunch have to pull out all the stops to keep her alive. At the same time, Jules and Vance learn the true meaning of home but once they find this precious entity they’ve been searching for all their lives, will Jules’s enemies tear it away?

----

And, were back with another Rock Chick adventure in Rock Chick Renegade. In this story, we follow Jules Lawson aka "The Law" and her quest to clean up the streets of Denver. As a social worker, Jules is very much attached to the kids she takes care of. So, when one of them ends up dead because of taking drugs; she starts a personal vendetta against the dealers. Now, I say this with love but Jules is - well to me - the only Rock Chick that is capable of defending herself. For obvious, reasons of course. She knows how to handle a gun and she can kick some serious ass. I, direct your attention to the club scene when she was with the other girls and one of Vance's old hook-ups show up. HOT DAMN JULES WAS ON FIREEE~~. She laid down the Law. hehe

Now, one night during her patrol she comes across resident Hot Bunch Guy- Vance Crowe. *SWOONS*  Do you hear the angels singing? Because I do every time this hot piece of  I DON'T EVEN KNOW walks on to the scene. All Native American with his long black hair, brown eyes, not to mention his mischievous shit-eating grin.....whoooo someone hold me. Vance is third in command at Nightingale Investigations right after Luke Stark (who you will meet later on :D). He's the best tracker there is, but has a criminal record as well. Arrested for grand theft auto, he changes when he meets Lee. Like every other alpha male in existence and similar to his fellow Hot Bunch brothers, Vance is very protective of the people he cares for and Jules is no exception. So, when she gets in trouble he's on the case!

Despite the sighs, rolling of the eyes, and the "REALLY?!" moments I had while reading this, I enjoyed this. Laughter was expected because I knew the same old antics and secondary characters would make an apperance again. There was some rocky road between the two when another Hot Bunch boy comes for some time, but it all worked out in the end.

But, there was a scene where I was shocked. Something happens to Jules towards the end, and it gives me feelings. Like, I don't know whether I should beat the crap out of her or hug her and never let go. I mean damn.

Is this the end? Uh NOPE. There are more Rock Chick adventures coming your way!

Rating: 4.2/5

Quote: (when Jules first meets one of Vance's old hook-up. LOL. warning: kind of long BUT READING IT TRUST ME YOU'LL LOVE IT. :D)

"Have you slept with Vance?' I asked, even though I knew.

She learned forward with a catty smile. "It was the best night of my goddamned life."

"It's good you'll have that memory." I stated calmly as if I was truly happy for her.

"You bitch!" she screamed. Then she came at me, hand out probably to grab my hair.

I was getting that opening a lot these days. I planned my feet, caught her wrist and flipped her on her back on the floor without barely moving.

Vance did move. He has his wallet out and threw some money on the table. Everyone was staring now most of them had turned to us enjoying the show.

I took a step toward her so I was looking down at her. "Stay away from Vance." I warned.

She was struggling to get up. "Fuck you!"

"That's Vance's job," I retorted.

Vance had me around the waist and was pulling me toward the door as Jackie made it to her feet. "I won't forget this!" she yelled.

"I hope not!" I yelled back at her, fighting against Vance's arm. "That way, next time you'll keep your fucking mouth shut or you won't find it so easy to get up!"

The moment I fell for Jules. LMAO

Book Review #25 [Rock Chick Reckoning by Kristen Ashley]

Stella’s the lead singer and lead guitarist of the Blue Moon Gypsies and Stella used to be Mace’s girl. Mace broke up with her though and the loss of him rocked her world. But Stella gets a call, late at night (again) from one of the members of her crazy band. She has to go play clean up (again) and runs into Mace (and a shed load of police) and ends up getting shot.

Mace finds he doesn’t like it much that his ex-girlfriend got shot, right in front of him but it’s worse. A very bad man has thrown down the gauntlet and ALL the Rock Chicks are in the firing line. Stella doesn’t want Mace to be the one to keep her alive but she has no choice… mainly because Mace isn’t giving her one.

----

So, I decided to start putting up reviews for other books I read that are far very far from YA world more often. And, I'm starting with this - Rock Chick Reckoning by Kristen Ashley. Let me start by saying this is the SIXTH book in the series not the first. Weird, I know. But, I decided to take my time to read this series and not in order. It's told from multiple POVS, but don't worry you never get confused. At least, I didn't.

[The low down? The Rock Chick series consists of sassy, fiery, STUBBORN women (Rock Chicks)  and their uber SEXY ,annoying, bossy alpha males (Hot Bunch) who get themselves involved in whirlwind adventures with guns, kidnappings, etc..]

Reckoning is Stella and Mace's story. Stella is the leader of a rock band in their hometown. While Mace is one of the private investigators in Nightingale Investigations. Stella is fiery, she's stubborn (-________-) and I gotta say somewhat wishy-washy. There were moments (and I mean MOMENTS!) were I was like "REALLY, STELLA PLEASE PROCEED TO GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOU ASS AND OPEN YOUR EYES!"...and then there were moments where I was like "Oh, okay okay. You alright." Because of her, I didn't enjoy this story and I had hoped but there was a light...

You get me? (sidebar: If you read, Kristen Ashley books before, you know where that phrase comes from. XD).
Mace, on the other hand, talk about sexyyyyyy *faints* Whew~ I loved Mace but he wasn't without his faults of course. Mace showed signs of seriously losing his temper a lot, but the reasons are explained. And, I gotta say what he had to go through. Damn. I'm surprised dude can continue living sanely.

Let's talking about Stella and Mace's relationship. Both are broken, both are frustrating, both are stubborn, both needs a good slap but they fit well like a puzzle and healed one another. I'll be honest not a huge fan of this couple especially Stella she was too stupid sometimes that I just wanted...SFDNVJDVLSDHNGIOHEGN!

*breathes* But, still I won't make rash judgement and choose them as my fav couple because there's at least 5 more to go. Besides, these two we get a whole barn full of wacked out characters. My favorites so far are: Tex, Luke, Lee, Jet, Vance. And, I'm serious when I say this cast IS FREAKING CRAZY! AND I LOVE IT! Man, if I ever had a chance to hang out with them...esp the boys. *wink wink*

I know this series is filled with TSTL main ladies. (too stupid too live) getting into situations where you find yourself sighing SO MUCH. But, I'll hold back the impatience & ride this wave 'till the end. Until, the next Rock Chick book...

Rock On!

Rating: 3/5

"Tex! Stop saying 'fuck' so loud!" screamed Indy

"Fuck" screamed Tex. "Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!"

LMAO I love Tex. best ever!

Book Review #24 [Insurgent by Veronica Roth]

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

 -----
*spoilers from Divergent included; strong felt curse words too* : )

Today we'll be discussing the second book in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth.

you guys. YOU GUYS. THIS BOOK.

Talk about an emotional ride. We return back with Tris and Four after the disastrous turn-out between Erudite and Dauntless members. After both of Tris' parents died and the death of Will, Tris is dealing with the overwhelming guilt that is gnawing at her. She's facing the cruel fact of how her world is turning out right before her eyes. She's loss. But even so, Tris continues to fight and fight; she continues to search for answers and never give up. Brave and strong but selfless and thoughtful. Dauntless and Abnegation. And, I have to say I absolutely LOVED HER because of that.

Four - in this book - is dealing with being reunited with his estrange father, and we all (those who read Divergent) know how difficult that must be for him. Oh man, we see so many sides to Four, it's amazing. I mean there was this one part with his dad in the cafeteria in front of everyone. HOLY SHIT GUYS I TEARED UP. It was so...sad. ;~~~;  and NOT in a good way. Both Tris and Four kept holding back from one another. Ugh, I just wanted to scream at them to just talk! They had a good amount of arguments in here, that yet again I wanted to scream. Frustrating in a way that I don't want to throw a few punches. It's a good feeling...

The relationship between the two is amazing. It felt so real, just the way they were with each other. They have this quiet magnetism to them. It's not about the physical, well not only. But, more on the emotional level. I have to admit in Divergent, it just felt like they were using each other as a crutch and nothing more. But, it definitely develops into something more in Insurgent. Not only that, but they have both grown (esp Tris) so much that they have officially taken a spot on my hero/heroine fav list. XD

Now, let's talk about the secondary characters. But, my favorite irriating one! PETER! Peter surprised me here, with the "certain" thing he did. I was like WHOA. I totally did not see that coming. Roth does such a good job with keeping you on your toes about these characters. I mean damn it, you don't even know who to trust and YES that includes Tris and Four!

{Caleb. MOTHERF***ING CALEB. I-I CAN'T. I really can't....}

-_______________- Anyway...

At the very end, I gasped. Quite a shocker, I have to say. I can't wait to see how this information is used.

Insurgent is action-packed, emotional, and the suspense will kill you! If you can, take the time to give this series a chance, it's a joy to read.

Rating: 5/5

Quote:
"In their enthusiasm for conflict resolution, the Amity have apparently forgotten that meddling creates more conflict," says Tobias (Four). "If we stay here much longer, I am going to punch someone, and it's not going to be pretty."
Caleb and Susan both raise their eyebrows at him. A few of the Amity at the table next to ours stop talking to stare.
"You heard me," Tobias says to them. They all look away.

LOL I loved that part.

Book Review #23 [The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen]

In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well.

As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together.

An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action, lies and deadly truths that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats.

-----

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen is a wonderful start to a trilogy.

Most of the books I read typical is from a female POV; at times I read books from a male's POV. Sage has officially come on my list as one of my favorite male heroes. Our main character Sage is witty, clever, the typical underdog and a bit of a rebel. Along with 3 other boys Sage is taken from his orphanage by a cunning man named Connor. Connor devices a plan to make one of the 3 impersonate the falling prince (Prince Jaron) of their land. Now, this alone caught my attention, it's pretty obvious how dangerous that plan is.

It's a battle between Sage and the other candidates to win and convince Connor to choose them as the prince, as the ones who are not picked are killed. There's a lot of lies, backstabbing, and mind games amongst everyone in this book but not so much that it's hard to understand.

The story was smooth and easy to follow. I, absolutely loved Sage's voice. Nielsen did a wonderful job in crafting this character, it was hard not to fall for Sage and root for him. He had a tendency to be a step ahead of everyone sometimes without even trying.

The twist in the end was really good, I honestly didn't see it coming until around the actual reveal. I'm glad this is a trilogy and I can't wait to see what Sage will do next.

Book Review #22 [Spell bound by Rachel Hawkins]

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

---

The final book of the Hex Hall series, I give to you. I'm kind of sad this is ending, I had no idea this was the last book.

Spell bound begins where Demonglass left off. Sophie finds herself in an unknown world all by herself. In this book along with Sophie we learn much much more about her mother's side of the family. It's shocking to say the least and a bit funny concerning what Sophie and her dad are.

Sophie faces a huge responsibility in this book. The war is coming and it's all up to her. But, what makes it even harder is that Sophie has to decide should I stop them? Or should I join them? Anyone would agree when I say when faced with the possibility of gaining power, it's a tempting offer.

All of our characters from Hex Hall and Demonglass make their return, along with a few new ones. We reunite with Archer, Jenna, Cal, Elodie and others as they help Sophie prepare for the war. As a bonus we even get to see a bit more into Archer's past and who he is. I wish it went a bit more. Maybe they'll be a short novella about Archer because I'd love that. I want to know what goes on inside of his head, and how he came to be apart of the Eye.

Now, addressing the MAJOR moment towards the end. I have to say one thing: Was that necessary?
No, I don't think it was. And, it's probably the one thing in the entire book, or the entire series that REALLY bugged me.

Overall, besides that blip on my happy meter; it was a decent ending to a decent series.

Book Review #21 [Storm by Brigid Kemmerer]

Earth, Fire, Air, Water – they have more power than you dream.

Ever since her ex-boyfriend spread those lies about her, Becca Chandler is suddenly getting all the guys—all the ones she doesn't want. Then she saves Chris Merrick from a beating in the school parking lot. Chris is different. Way different: he can control water—just like his brothers can control fire, wind, and earth. They’re powerful. Dangerous. Marked for death.

And now that she knows the truth, so is Becca.

Secrets are hard to keep when your life’s at stake. When Hunter, the mysterious new kid around school, turns up with a talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, Becca thinks she can trust him. But then Hunter goes head-to-head with Chris, and Becca wonders who’s hiding the most dangerous truth of all.
------

Today I will review Brigid Kemmerer's debut YA novel "Storm"!

OMG.

no.

HOLY BATMAN THE MERRICK BROTHERS!

In Storm, we are introduced to the Merrick brothers. We have eldest Michael, the twins Nick and Gabriel and the youngest Chris. These brothers are nowhere near ordinary, they have the ability to manipulate the natural elements of the earth. (hence elementals..hehe). Now, each brother has their own element. Mike - earth ; Nick- air ; Gabe - fire ; and Chris is water. Storm is an introduction to the Elemental world, to the Merrick backgrounds and the boys themselves.

It is told from the youngest - Chris - point of view. One thing I loved about Chris's POV whenever he was around his brothers is that you get the sense of the indecisiveness the youngest of a group of siblings would feel if they were put into a tense situation. Say, like if they fight and argue. Now, I can't say what it feels like exactly because I'm not the youngest of my family; I'm more middle/eldest. But, Brigid wrote it so well, that you understood and felt what Chris was going through.

Like for instance the scene in the yard with the four brothers..(don't worry; no spoilers) and how Chris didn't know what to do or who to back up. He was confused and helpless. And, I LOVED it. It was so good; it's one of my favorite scenes. I have to give up for Brigid she wrote the voice of a teenage boy so well. And, not many people can do that.

Okay, okay. I'm going on and on about the boys. Which trust I can continue to do. But, I have yet to introduced the other lead. Becca Chandler. Becca has some tough times at school, she's a pretty tough girl. She held her own when the time came, and never back down. She refused to become the victim again. I won't say much about the "victim" comment because it will just give away too much. We also have Hunter, the mysterious new kid and also Chris' competition for Becca's attention.

I'll be honest. I found myself at time skimming through Becca's POV, and no not because she didn't interest me. It's because the boys interested me ALOT more. (lol). I just couldn't wait until the story went back to them.

Now, for the baddies. We have an organization called the Guides. And, their kind of the people who keeps the Elemental society in check. The boys and Becca go through some problems with them, that lead to a good handful of action packed moments.

The next book of the Elemental series is Spark. And, it's told from hot headed fire-starter Gabriel's POV.

AND I CAN'T WAIT. MY FAVORITE MERRICK BROTHER! And, with Gabe's POV that means we'll also get some Nick. And, I just love the twins. O-O

Rating: 5/5

Quote:

"Inch by Inch, Hunter lowered the gun into Michael's palm, finally letting go.
Michael didn't move. "You all right?"
Hunter nodded.
"Good." Michael wrapped his hand around the hilt.
Then he lifted it, cocked the hammer, and put the barrel against Hunter's forehead. "Now, where the fuck are my brothers?""

I did a combination of aww-oh shit go Mikey-hell yeah fist pump moment at this scene. LOL

Book Review #20 [Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout]

There is need. And then there is Fate...

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

----
(reviewing this book because it made me way emotional)

I bring you the second book in the Covenant series - Pure. Following the first book of the series Half Blood (I will be very emotional with this review, excuse me.)

We have Alex our hot-head heroine - Aiden, the loyal warrior - Seth our arrogant, playful second lead.
Pretty much starting off where the last one started, things get very tense between the Pures and the Half-Bloods. And, Alex gets caught in the middle of it.

She's still pretty much the same hot-headed and reckless chick she was in Half-Blood. A surprise was that we got ALOT of Seth in this book. When he was first introduced in the first book he came off as very stoic and cold. But, I loved that in this new one we see different sides to him. (and just so you know I'm totally Team Seth. >.>)

Aiden. *sigh* Aiden. What can I say? Dude, you were so wishy-washy here that I was just a bit turned off. I mean it's either this or that. I MEAN MAKE UP YOUR MIND!  See, Pures and Half Bloods together is a big no-no. Aiden is a pure; Alex is a H.B. I understood the consequences (if they were to really get together) as it was shown in a certain scene. But, even so Aiden you can not do what you constantly did to Alex all up and down this book. Push and pull, push and pull.....I mean, EITHER MAN UP OR SHUT UP.

*deep breath*

*warning Seth-induced fangirling beginning*

I LOVE SETH. THE POOL SCENE. AND THE CUDDLE BUNNY SCENES. /faints  Seth was absolutely perfect in this book, I don't care what anyone says. Hmph.

I'll be honest I'd love it if Alex and Seth end up together. But, let's be real, hmm? Since when do the main girls EVER end up with the second lead guy -- who by the way is usually the one always there for her, but noooo yet she picks stoic oh-I-can't-be-with-you-but-I-love-you-so-I'll-confuse-you-here-and-there guy....LOL

Anyway, the next book is Deity and we will see the consequences following closer to the reveal of everyone's destiny/secrets. Now, as a certified Seth-lover I feel like I'm setting myself up for pain and heartbreak when this ride is over. And, I fucking hate it.

Book Review #19 [Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula (Cassidy Jones Adventures, #1) by Elise Stokes]

Fourteen-year-old Cassidy Jones wakes up the morning after a minor accident in the laboratory of a world-renowned geneticist to discover that her body has undergone some bizarre physical changes. Her senses, strength, and speed have been radically enhanced.

After exploring her newfound abilities, Cassidy learns that the geneticist, Professor Serena Phillips, is missing and that foul play is suspected. Terrified that her physical changes and Professor Phillips' disappearance are somehow connected, Cassidy decides to keep her strange transformation a secret. That is, until she meets the professor's brilliant and mysterious fifteen-year-old son, Emery. An unlikely duo, they set out to find Emery's mother, who is key in explaining Cassidy's newly acquired superpowers.

Their lives are put at risk when they find themselves embroiled in a dangerous, action-packed adventure. Soon they are forced to confront a maniacal villain willing to do anything - including murder — to reach his own ambitious goals.

----

Besides Percy Jackson and another book series that I can't remember right now, Cassidy Jones Adventures is another middle-grade series that I really enjoy. It's a nice fluffy read when you want a break from the YA books drowning in a vampire/werewolf/witch, etc pool.

We join Cassidy Jones and Emery Phillips on a mission to save Emery's mother and to discover the secrets of Cass's newfound powers. Cass and Emery go through a lot together from breaking and entering to engaging in crazy fights with ninjas! I love the dynamic to Cass and Emery as their friendship starts to grow. Cass, even without her ablities, is sort of a person who runs on her emotions without exactly thinking first; which is exactly where Emery steps in. He helps Cass ride through this change talking her step by step on how to control it in her everyday life. And, of course how to have some fun with it.

There is a slight romantic interest in the story but nothing too important, which is something else I appreciated. Stokes focused more on Cass and Emery's friendship and adventures, than Cass using her new abilities to take advantage of her social life in school. Even so, there are some adorable moments between Cassidy and Emery as they learn about each other.

Besides, are two main leads we also get introduced to Cassidy's family. Her mother, television star dad, family friend Ben, her twin brother Nate and the adorable Chazz (her baby brother). Besides Casmery (lol my couple name for Cassidy and Emery. Lame, I know.) Chazz is my favorite. He's sooo adorable. He's completely immersed in the comic book/superhero world. One day's he's the Hulk, the next he comes downstairs dressed in black as a ninja. I can not wait until he finds out his own big sister is one of them.

The next book is Cassidy Jones and Vulcan's Gift. I will be reading that and I will be doing a review Look out for that!

Book Review #18 [Out Of Sight Out Of Time by Ally Carter]

The last thing Cammie Morgan remembers is leaving the Gallagher Academy to protect her friends and family from the Circle of Cavan--an ancient terrorist organization that has been hunting her for over a year. But when Cammie wakes up in an alpine convent and discovers months have passed, she must face the fact that her memory is now a black hole. The only traces left of Cammie’s summer vacation are the bruises on her body and the dirt under her nails, and all she wants is to go home.

Once she returns to school, however, Cammie realizes that even the Gallagher Academy now holds more questions than answers. Cammie, her friends, and mysterious spy-guy Zach must face their most difficult challenge yet as they travel to the other side of the world, hoping to piece together the clues that Cammie left behind. It’s a race against time. The Circle is hot on their trail and willing stop at nothing to prevent Cammie from remembering what she did last summer.

----

I bring you the recent adventures of Cammie Morgan in Ally Carter's -- Out Of Sight Out Of Time.

Similar from my Goodreads review -- You know, I was a bit worried about how Carter was going to pull off this one, seeing how Cammie upped and left in the last book but she did it and IT WAS FANTASTIC.
Cammie grew up immensely in this book. I mean to think about how she was in the first book to now?!

Cammie went through a lot in this book, fighting to regain her lost memories. These books are just in first person so we always know what's going on with Cammie and her thoughts. But, this time Cammie was in the dark and so were we. You had no idea what she'd remember or what she do. Cammie most of the time in this book worked on auto-pilot; so it wasn't until someone had to scream her name that she realized she was holding a gun...

There was a moment in the book dealing with Bex that had me VERY WORRIED. I had to stop reading for a moment and I said to myself  "Let's not go there, Ms. Carter. PLEASE?" Thankfully she didn't. Loved Zach, weird how he was the sane person in this book, because usually he's "mister brooding in the corner let me be mysterious over here" guy. (lol) We got to see a different more vulnerable side to Zach and Carter did it so well that it wasn't too mushy or didn't deviate from the type person Zach is.

A little short on Cammie and Zach's relationship. PERFECT. You know how in some YA books the guy and the girl are in danger and they decide to make-out or something in the middle of that? UGH! Doesn't that make you mad? It does for me. Zach and Cam? These two knew that there's a time and a place. And, that's what makes me love them so much. While everyone else, even her friends, questioned Cammie's sanity. Zach never did. He went along with her.

Towards the end we found out a lot of answers, and it tied up a lot of loose ends. There's only one book left in the series. ;~~~; I'm not ready for this to end. I'm not. But, it will be the final battle between Gallagher/Blackthorne v.s The Circle.

Book Review #17 The [Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa]

---

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
---

Afternoon, everyone! I, come bearing a new review! Julie Kagawa's newest YA novel - The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1). Now, her last name may seem familiar to you and that's because she's also known for her hit YA trilogy - The Iron Fey.

The Immortal Rules is a completely different environment from The Iron Fey, still of the supernatural realm but a different one. One we as YA readers are familiar with --- Vampires! I won't compare it to I.F because it's completely different and dare I say...BETTER. Not that I didn't enjoy I.K I did - certain aspects of it that is (more so Puck. I loved me some Puck. XD).

But, our heroine Allison is darker and gritter, she has a lot of problems going on. She lost her mom, she lives in a messed up society where she literally has to fight for her life. She lives in a world where vampires dominate and humans fear. It's be eaten...or be eaten.

I loved how Julie didn't bombard me with information, she threw me right into the story. She trusted me to understand what was going on as I read, to pick up the plot as it moved forward. Another thing is Allison herself. She separated Allison's story into four parts - Human / Vampire / Monster / Wanderer. That was excellent; you're able to travel alongside Allison thru her transition in this new life.

As a human or vampire Allison is a fighter and she kicks ass. She's determined, loyal, SMART, and a go-getter. Allison even wields a katana as a weapon. I mean, A KATANA! Come on, that just screams badass, doesn't it? She's keeps heading forward even when her life is drastically changed. Or even when she's suddenly on her own..does she cry? whine? give up? NO. She's keeps fighting. And, that's enough to keep me reading.

Of course we have our heroes. Kanin and Zeke. I like how Zeke is the love intrest, but she didn't push it. It developed on it's own slowly..but surely. Loved LOVED Kanin. I need him back, I do.

I can't wait for the next book. I'm dying to know what happens to next. Will she find what's she looking for? What about what she left behind at the end? Will she get "it" back? Who knows...

Rating: 5/5

Quote: "You will always be a monster - there is no turning back from it. But what type of monster you become is entirely up to you."

Book Review #16 [The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong]

----

All Chloe Saunders wants is a life like any normal teenager – the chance to get through school, make friends, and maybe meet a boy.  But when she starts seeing ghosts, she knows that like will never be the same again.
Soon the ghosts are everywhere, demanding her attention.  When Chloe finally breaks down, she’s admitted to a group home for disturbed kids.  At first Lyle House seems okay, but as she gets to know the other patients – charming Simon and his ominous, unsmiling brother Derek; obnoxious Tori; and Rae, who has a ‘thing’ for fire – Chloe begins to realise that something strange and sinister binds them all together, and it isn’t your usual ‘problem kid’ behaviour.
And they’re about to discover that Lyle House is not your usual group home, either…
--

The Summoning is the first novel in the Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelley Armstrong. We follow young Chloe Saunders as she discovers and experiences a new world. She sees apparitions, spirits, ghosts. After having a mental breakdown Chloe's aunt sends her to a special place where she can get the help she needs. There Chloe meets other kids who in a way are just like her; special in the supernatural sense.

Now, I'll get straight to the point -- I didn't enjoy this book at all. I stopped about close to the end. I just couldn't take it anymore. If you look on my Goodreads profile, you'll be able to find a summarized version of feelings to this book. In case, you rather not do that here it is:

"I didn't like it. At all. I gave up half way through the book. It just seemed to drag way too long, I mean I understood what was happening way before and I mean WAY BEFORE Chloe (main girl) did. Okay, now Chloe I understand the frustration and the confusion that comes with anything supernatural. I get it, I do. But, GOOD LORD she rubbed me the wrong way. Not that she was a bitch or anything...It's just I found her...SO BORING!! >_< I mean, ugh I can't even explain it well, basically Chloe is as plain as bread. Nothing special, no special oopf. Now, the boys. Derek - Did we really need constant tell of his acne and body odor? I got it the first time, js. Simon - blah; nothing but his brother's shadow. Well, that's all I have to say. I doubt I'll continue this series. /shrug"
^
All of that is pretty much how I feel. Now, I am all for paranormal novels trust me. But, unfortunately this one just didn't do it for me.

I think this would have been much better and a bit more enjoyable if the main character or all of them actually had a bit more appeal.  Another note, this reminded me of Armstrong's Bitten novel; dull and unpleasant.

Rating: 1/5

whoa. first time giving a 1 on here. o-o

Book Review #15 [A Spy in the House by Y.S. Lee]

Rescued from the gallows in 1850s London, young orphan (and thief) Mary Quinn is surprised to be offered a singular education, instruction in fine manners — and an unusual vocation. Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls is a cover for an all-female investigative unit called The Agency, and at seventeen, Mary is about to put her training to the test. Assuming the guise of a lady’s companion, she must infiltrate a rich merchant’s home in hopes of tracing his missing cargo ships. But the household is full of dangerous deceptions, and there is no one to trust — or is there? Packed with action and suspense, banter and romance, and evoking the gritty backstreets of Victorian London, this breezy mystery debuts a daring young detective who lives by her wits while uncovering secrets — including those of her own past.
-------
Follow me to the Victorian Era as I review Y.S. Lee's debut novel A Spy in the House (The Agency #1). We follow Mary Quinn a seventeen year old orphan who is shadowing as a spy for all-female agency. Mary is an out-spoken, independent, headstrong, and intelligent young woman whose been through a lot in her young life.

In the beginning we meet a 12-years old Mary on the verge of life or death. After escaping by the help of Annie, Mary enrolls in Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls. But, this academy is secretly the front of a detective agency for women.  Think of the times. It's in the 1800s' around this time women weren't taken very seriously. Only seen to do the housework. To "fragile" to do anything other than that. This is the catalyst for The Agency. Using that stereotype for women, no one would suspect them as hired spies. It's a perfect set-up when you think about it; it gives them the advantage.

Our male counterpart to Mary is James Easton. Oh James. He's witty, arrogant, and adorable! When he first meets Mary he has his judgement and questions. (I LOVE how they first met. How awkward was that? lol) But, as time went by and they saw each other more; James came to respect and appreciative Mary as an equal. They were an adorable pair, I really enjoyed their flirty banter. I also enjoyed how James and Mary's relationship is one that will gradual grow. Sadly, there is an obstacle in the way. Mary's secret --- of being a spy. I'm curious as to how everything will turn out when James find out.

Either way, I will continue to follow Mary on her adventures along with James and the ladies of the Agency.

I recommend this to anyone with a thirst for historical romance/mystery.

Book Review #14 [Everneath by Brodi Ashton]

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.
She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.
Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.
As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...
-----------

Isn't this cover just so pretty? Love the red dress and the backdrop. Yeah.

Today I'll be reviewing Brodi Ashton's YA novel Everneath. Similar to my last book review this book is based on a piece of Greek Mythology; more specifically Hades and Persephone. You guys know the story right? Hades was in love with her. so he tricked Persephone to stay in the Underworld by getting her to eat 4 seeds from a pomegranate. She's stuck there for 4 months and the other months she gets come back to the surface. Blah Blah.

Anyway, in this novel our versions of Hades and Lady P. are Cole and Nikki. What I loved about these two was that everything was pretty much clear cut. There was no beating around the bush. Cole knew Nikki didn't want to be with him, just like Nikki knew that she'll never really escape Cole. This book can easily be mistaken as Nikki moping around doing the teenage angst party but it wasn't. The only thing Nikki wanted was redemption. To apologize, to make-up for the mistake she made before her time runs out again.

Another character we are introduced to is Jack. OH JACK. JACK...It's impossible not to fall for him. After losing Nikki for so long, he never gave up on her. I loved his reaction when he found out she was back. Everything between Nikki and Jack is so simple, you can tell they love each other so much.

You know when you read a YA novel there's almost ALWAYS a love-triangle? And, half of them are just so frustrating because the girl can never make up her mind, or one of the guys is complete douche? Ms. Aston did this triangle SO WELL! You can't hate Cole or Jack. You end up feeling for the both of them. And, that's what makes it so hard to pick a guy to root for. I swayed back and forth while I read this. Ugh, damn you Brodi Aston for making me love both these boys. If I had to pick a team...arrghhh I'd go --- TEAM JACK. (sorry Cole -________-) I mean yes I won't deny the whole elusive bad boy thing Cole got going on is entincing. But, Jack...OH SWEET SUGARY HEAVEN JACK. He's so sweet, caring, protective and just..well damn it he's Jack and that's all the reason I need. Hmph.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a solid YA novel, a non-hair ripping frustrating love triangle with a splash of Greek mythology to make things interesting.

Book Review # 13 [Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan]

Hello all! I've brought a special book review 5 in 1 ! It's the popular middle grade novels Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan! Right away I can tell you that this is series is one of my favorites.
-----------------------

In this series we follow a young boy by the name of Perseus "Percy" Jackson. Percy is described and/or seen as a troubled child. He's been kicked out of school too many too count, has ADHD and not to mention dyslexia. You can imagine how hard Percy's life is already, but it gets even more difficult when he discovers his true nature that he's actually a "demi-god" or half human/half god. He also uncovers that his so-called absent father is actually Poseidon; God of the Sea! He gets sent to a camp that trains and protects kids like him - Camp Half-Blood.

Along with his best friends Annabeth [daughter of Athena' goddess of wisdom] and Grover; a satyr. Percy goes on wild adventures to save not only his world, but the mighty Olympians. Along the way, we see Percy grow into a weak skinny little 12 years old boy and into a 16 years old courageous, brave hero who can command an entire army to defeat their enemy.

We get a look into the gods themselves and their relationship with Percy. For example --- Ares [god of war] he and Percy have a very wary and violent relationship each always read to take down the other.
And, then there's Mr. D or Dionysus [ god of wine] who happens to be Percy's camp director at Camp Half Blood. Although throughout the series, it may seem like he doesn't care about Percy readers can tell it's all an act.

Now for out villans. We meet up with Medusa, Cyclops, Furies, HellHounds, etc. But, the main goal is for Percy and company to defeat the mighty titan Kronos; father of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. (and in a way....Percy's grandpa. ha. how messed up is that?) Kronos uses a fellow camper and friend of Annabeth, Luke [son of Hermes] to get what he wants. We have several attempts of saving and/or stopping Luke throughout the books.

Overall, this a very enjoyable series. And, I highly recommend it. I know, it's targeted demographic is middle graders, but this can be enjoyed by ALL AGES.

Book Review #12 [Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes]

-----

Every other day, Kali D'Angelo is a normal sixteen-year-old girl. She goes to public high school. She attends pep rallies. She's human.

And then every day in between . . .She's something else entirely.

Though she still looks like herself, every twenty-four hours predatory instincts take over and Kali becomes a feared demon-hunter with the undeniable urge to hunt, trap, and kill zombies, hellhounds, and other supernatural creatures. Kali has no idea why she is the way she is, but she gives in to instinct anyway. Even though the government considers it environmental terrorism.

When Kali notices a mark on the lower back of a popular girl at school, she knows instantly that the girl is marked for death by one of these creatures. Kali has twenty-four hours to save her and, unfortunately, she'll have to do it as a human. With the help of a few new friends, Kali takes a risk that her human body might not survive. . .and learns the secrets of her mysterious condition in the process.

Greetings fellow book reading loverssss! I am back and bearing a new review for the new year. It's Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Barnes is more known for her -- Raised By Wolves series. Anyway, the synopsis above is clear enough to let you know the premise of the book.

Kali - is our distraught, lonely, confused, and might I add dangerous heroine. Kali has been dealing with an odd phenomenon that's been happening to her ever since she was 12. By day she's human; by night she's....well not. And, there in lies the problem. Just what the heck is Kali? She spends a good middle portion of the book figuring that out. Oh! But, don't worry it doesn't drag rather it keeps you attentive. Besides that Kali and the gang (who will be introduced) are trying to figure out what the hell is going on in their little neighborhood. We got both bad and good people doing what their not supposed to be doing. And, Kali seems to be smack dab in the middle of it all.

Our hero - Kali's shall I say "other half" (and you'll understand what I mean when you read it) is Zev. I like him, I do. He may just make my "favorite hero" list. But, there's something different about Zev. For almost the entire book - key word "almost" he's not there physically. Rather he's there psycially. With Kali. He guides on her quest for answers, on her quest to find him.

Side characters - Bethany, Skylar, and Elliot get pulled into the action. Well, for at least one of them they had no choice. Their great companions to Kali. Considering everything they find out and experienced I LOVED how they stuck by her no matter how many times she said she didn't need them, especially Skylar. It may seem annoying "oh, why can't they just listen to her!". But, honestly I'm glad they didn't. Because Kali needed them, and they needed her. And, even if they were a bit skeptically and hesitant *coughELLIOTcough* they were there.  If I had to point out one thing I esp. loved was the fact that- when we DID find out what Kali is I had no indication of it until it was revealed. Barnes did a good job of not making the obvious...well obvious. To me at least.

Looking for a YA novel with solid characters and no wishy-washy plot, sprinkled with a bit of "oh, so that's it? Never would've guessed." sauce? Well, Every Other Day is your book.
