Book Review #29 [ICED by Karen Marie Moning]

The year is 1 AWC—After the Wall Crash. The Fae are free and hunting us. It’s a war zone out there, and no two days are alike. I’m Dani O’Malley, the chaos-filled streets of Dublin are my home, and there’s no place I’d rather be.

Dani “Mega” O’Malley plays by her own set of rules—and in a world overrun by Dark Fae, her biggest rule is: Do what it takes to survive. Possessing rare talents and the all-powerful Sword of Light, Dani is more than equipped for the task. In fact, she’s one of the rare humans who can defend themselves against the Unseelie. But now, amid the pandemonium, her greatest gifts have turned into serious liabilities.

Dani’s ex–best friend, MacKayla Lane, wants her dead, the terrifying Unseelie princes have put a price on her head, and Inspector Jayne, the head of the police force, is after her sword and will stop at nothing to get it. What’s more, people are being mysteriously frozen to death all over the city, encased on the spot in sub-zero, icy tableaux.

When Dublin’s most seductive nightclub gets blanketed in hoarfrost, Dani finds herself at the mercy of Ryodan, the club’s ruthless, immortal owner. He needs her quick wit and exceptional skill to figure out what’s freezing Fae and humans dead in their tracks—and Ryodan will do anything to ensure her compliance.

Dodging bullets, fangs, and fists, Dani must strike treacherous bargains and make desperate alliances to save her beloved Dublin—before everything and everyone in it gets iced.

OH MY. OH...MY.

How do I words everyone? How do I words? I am all over this book. Set in the same world and timeline as the Fever series, this new triology brought by Ms. Karen Marie Moning is bringing us a new story surrounding two VERY familar characters from Mac and Barrons world (the main protagonists from the Fever series in case you didn't know..)

In ICED we follow smart mouth, energetic Dani O'Malley  as she protects her messed up city of Dublin alongside mystery club owner Ryodan. Now, guys I'm just gonna start out by saying I like Dani and Ryodan wayyy more than Mac and Barrons.

I guess mostly because Dani grew up in this world so she knows her stuff, she knows how to protect and to fight for herself. And Ryodan (unlike Barrons) is much more -- easy to like. I'm not saying Ryodan is some saint because he is not. He's a robot like figure. Calculating and cold. Not to mention his business Club Chester isn't exactly for the weak-hearted. There's this quote that describes him well:

"She think he's not an animal like Barrons. That's he more civilized. She's right, he is more polished. But, it only makes him more dangerous. With Barrons you expect to get fucked up royally. With Ryodan? You don't see it coming...Barrons breaks heads. Ryodan turns them inside out. Barrons fucks you up. Ryodan makes you fuck yourself up."

But, he has his light moments that made me smile or chuckle mostly when he's with Dani and with Barron I didn't really have that.

Other than these two we also have the return of Christian. He's newly-transformed and slowly but surely becoming an Unseelie Prince. Christian has a bit of a creepy infatuation with Dani in here but not so much were you'd be gagging in your mouth ; more like giving him the eye. We're also introduced to Dani's best bud Dancer. Now, at first Dancer seems like the only normal person in the story. DING DING!! Normal? That's a red flag right there if you've read the Fever series. There's something about Dancer I know there is. I mean he even had the balls to stand up and call out Ryodan and Christian TO THEIR FACES. And, walked away without a scratch!

Suspicious much? Hopefully, we'll learn about Dancer in the coming books.

The surrounding issue everyone has with ICED is the relationship or could be relationship between Ryodan and Dani. Guys, GUYS!  Listen up. I'm all for Dani and Ryodan if Moning solves the age thing. I'm also for Dani not ending up with anything. But, let's be real there was no indication of Ryodan having feelings for Dani in this book. On occasion and straight-out he's mentioned that she will become one hell of a woman in her years (with which I agree). But, it was nothing more than that. I mean Dani and Ryodan was more like....well Batman and Robin. I think we gotta awhile before it goes any further. That's all I gotta say.

Either way, go check out this new series because you'll be in for a wild ride!
